4th Jan U13s 2 - 4 Castleford Town

Sherburn U13s took a break from their challenge for the league title to visit high flying Premier division team Castleford town in the last 8 of the Invitation Cup. The home team started the strongest, working Sherburn all over the pitch but the away side's back four were solid against all attacks. Declan Lewis dominated the line and had the best half so far this season, with Newbon partnering him well. Carr and Macca Hardcastle found plenty of joy down the right wing and it was Sherburn who broke the deadlock after standing tall against the premier side. Carr broke down the wing and his delivery found Thomson at the back post for a tap in. Five minutes later and Macca Hardcastle's penetrating run ended in a penalty after he was dragged down. Carr stepped up but shot straight at the home keeper.

Castleford then took the game again to Sherburn, Harrison pulled off three good saves, notably one excellent stop when he tipped over a long range effort as the home spectators were already celebrating an equaliser.

At half time Sherburn were in the lead, with the away side working exceptionally hard to compete at a higher standard. The second half was dominated by the Premier team who had undoubtedly been given a talking to. For twenty minutes Sherburn continued to battle without creating any chances, Macca and Kurt Hardcastle standing out as the most hardworking pair on the pitch. Castleford town were quickly awarded a penalty from a handball but the spot kick was blasted over. The premier team's pressure soon took its toll however, and some good play ended with an equaliser. Sherburn responded quickly, Carr putting a long ball through for Macca Hardcastle who bravely threw himself at the ball with the keeper challenging; the keeper blocked the headed effort and Carr put the follow up wide with Sherburn's captain a heap in the box. It was to be Sherburn's final effort on goal, unable to maintain their level of play. Three quick goals followed for Castleford Town, the final being an unstoppable volley from outside the box, but Sherburn rallied again and Carr finally netted with a left footed lob from outside the area.

Every player should be proud of their performance and showed that the team can compete at a much higher level, with the home manager commenting that Sherburn are a better side than some of the other teams in the Premier Division. The U13s now need to take this great performance into the second half of the season and earn promotion into the next tier of the Charles Rice League. MOM went to Macca Hardcastle, who gave a fantastic example of how to captain a team and lead by example.

14th Dec

U13s 8 - 3 Next Generation U13s

The U13s progressed to the quarter finals of the Invitation Cup with a nervy win against Next Generation. Macca Hardcastle and Domonic Ballance bagged four goals each to seal the win. Sherburn cruised throughout, but towards the end of the second half the home side found a reserve of energy and took the game to Sherburn, forcing Harrison into a tremendous save before scoring three goals in quick succession. Newbon and Lewis made the victory safe with some stout defending, and Newbon's performance throughout earned him MOM along with Ballance.

14th Dec U8s vs Upton Juniors U8s

Game One - Sherburn U8s 1 - 8 Upton Juniors U8s

Within 30 seconds of kick off Sherburn attacked the visitors goal with a Leah Jordan shot that went inch's wide of the goal, but the Sherburn dominance was not to continue. The highly organised Upton team came back at Sherburn and scored their first of 8 goals within 2 minutes, by half time it was 0-6 to the visitors despite an improving performance from 'keeper Fraser Beck. With their usual style Sherburn went into the second half with a determined attitude and although they couldn't catch up they stemmed the attacks to such extent that Upton only added 2 more goals. 4 minutes before the final whistle a Sam Thomas cross was handled by the Upton defender! The Ref, Rob Prudhoe, immediately pointed to the spot and the penalty was converted into a goal by Thomas, a nice consolation goal for the home team.

Solid performances were given from all the players but the player of the match award was given to the midfield dynamo Leah Jordan.

Sherburn's line up was Beck, Goodall, Ward, Bean, Evans, Jordan and Thomas (c)

Game Two - Sherburn U8s 2 - 1 Upton Juniors U8s

Sherburn held Upton to nil nil until seconds before half time, when the wonderfully skilled Upton winger fired in a superbly taken shot, but it proved not to be another white wash for the visitors thanks to the whole team. Harrison Goodall, who scored his first goal of the season, and his second ever for the club got Sherburn off the mark, he positioned himself on the back post and a Thomas corner went straight past every one for Goodall to tap in - much to the delight of the whole team especially the young defender. Sherburn's confidence rose with every pass of the ball, with 2 minutes to go Goodall made an amazing pass forward to split the Upton defence, Thomas ran straight onto the pass a buried it with superb accuracy! A much needed and well deserved win for the youngest section for the club.

6th Dec

U15 Girls  6 - 0  Whitley Wolverines Girls U15

Another terrific team performance saw Sherburn maintain the top spot and
extend their unbeaten run to 10 matches.  Rosie Bradley fired home the
opening goal after 5 minutes, Amy Lawrence scored a stylish hat-trick,
Lizzie Hare added a fifth and Lucy Beilby completed the scoring by
converting a penalty.  Player of the match Hayley Lewis was dominant in
defence and Katie Sadler comfortable in goal.  Hannah Davis passed with
precision from midfield and was ably assisted by determined and industrious performances from Harriet Thompson and Rhiannon Spencer.

Special mention should be given to the Whitley keeper who denied the home side the opportunity to add significantly to their goal tally.  This was a very satisfying result to end the year for the Sherburn girls.

1st Dec Club manager Nick Peacock continues to show his support for the junior section. The UEFA B license coach has now delivered training sessions to the U13s, U15 Girls and U16 Boys and offers his support to any junior coaches who feel they would benefit from Nick and his staff working with their players or aiding them on their own coaching development.        Contact us for more info.
