The Thirds went into
this match against
Moorends trying to
build on their draw
against Willow park
the previous week.
The opposition
Moorends had only
suffered one defeat
all season and were
shaping up to be
likely title
challengers, despite
this Rose were
buoyed thanks due to
the return of Nick
Jackson as manager
after 5 years out of
the management fold.
Moorends started the
match the better of
the 2 teams cauing
the Sherburn defence
problems out wide
with the pace of
their wingers.
Centre halves Liddle
and Sammy stood
strong and soaked up
the early pressure.
The Thirds gradually
got a foothold in
the match with some
strong tackling in
the centre of the
park Meaney and
Bradley letting the
Moorends midfield
know they were now
in for a tough
contest if they
didn't already
realise this.
George and Lancy
were begining to see
a lot of possession
and began feeding
the front two of
Roberts and Rich.
Roberts should have
given Rose the lead
as Sherburn took
control, the
Moorends defence was
rocked and the
contest was evenly
matched.
It was the Thirds
who broke the
deadlock, a pinpoint
free kick from
Bradley found the
head of a swooping
Sammy who looped the
ball over the static
goalkeeper.
Moorends now
deflated began to
lift their game and
their centre forward
rifled home an
equaliser on the
stroke of half time
after some very poor
Sherburn tackling in
the area.
The second half
started with the
Thirds on top
stifling the
Moorends passing
again with some
ferocious tackling
all over the muddy
pitch. Lancy on the
wing now began to
terrorise the
Moorends defence
with some fantastic
dribbling and
pinpoint crossing
which had the
Moorends defence in
chaos. George and
Roberts
also built on their
strong first half
performances,
using their pace to
penetrate the
defence working off
the big target man
Rich up front.
The Thirds
deservedly went 2-1
up midway through
the second half,
after some great
approach play
Roberts
turned inside the
area to clinically
bag his second goal
in as many games.
Moorends now began
to see the game
slipping from their
grasp as Lancy
and Roberts both
wasted good chances
to wrap up the three
points.
Approaching the
final 15 minutes
Moorends began to
step up their
performance and
began creating
chances only to find
the Rose keeper
Martin in fine form
making a string of
fantastic saves,
Moorends finally got
their equaliser with
ten minutes on the
clock, their central
midfielder was given
too much time on the
ball as he threaded
a ball through to
his right winger who
susequently curled a
cross along the six
yard box, the
unfortunate Parnaby
could only look up
in despair as the
ball cannoned of his
shin and into the
empty goal 2-2.
Moorends now had
victory in sight and
began to bomb
forward chasing the
victory, Sammy and
Liddle were forced
into some last ditch
tackling. The
decisive point in
the match came when
Shaun mistimed a
tackle in the area
and the referee
rightly awarded a
penalty. The
impressive Martin
made a fantastic
save from the spot
kick only to see the
same player slam
home the match
winner from the
resulting corner
3-2.
Westy and Jacko
chose Lancy as their
Third team man of
the match after a
hard working
performance both in
attack and defence.
