West Yorkshire League Cup Quarter-Final                                            Carlton Athletic 1 - 2 First Team (AET)

Sherburn White Rose have made it through to the semi finals of the league cup, after a hard earned victory away at holders Carlton Athletic. 2 - 1 after extra time.

Sherburn playing up the hill started the game very well indeed - playing some excellent football, so much so that they took the lead after 5mins Marc Bradley scored from a shot on the edge of the box which the goalkeeper was unable to deal with. Sherburn continued to play some excellent passing football, Ryan Hill and Scott Williams especially, getting in behind Carlton's back three. Only players just unable to get on the end of crosses and being more clinical in and around the penalty area kept the scoreline at 1 - 0. Unfortunately for Sherburn they had to make an early change when Jamie Middleton had to be replaced by Lee Gemmell due to injury but this did not seem to have any negative effect on the team's performance in the first half. Carlton's only response in the first half was to rely on their Goalkeeper kicking the ball some 70 yards down the pitch and relying on any mistakes that they could feed off. Unfortunately there weren't any and Simon Hudson had very little to deal with.

Carlton started the brightest in the second half after an obvious discussion at half time, they were able to capitalise on a dubious free kick which was awarded to them - it was a poor free kick which was nothing less than a grubber, passing five Sherburn players who failed to clear meaning Carlton equalised. Both teams created opportunities in what became a very open second half due to the fact that the amount of mistakes that were made from both sides neither team could take any of the opportunities. And even though Carlton had a player sent off, Sherburn could not make the extra man count, which was very disappointing.

Sherburn were fortunate enough to play up hill first at extra time and Carlton offered very little in attacking prowess, Sherburn also offered very little in this half and started to look very tired.

In the second half, with Sherburn playing down the hill and both teams cancelling each other out, Scott Williams managed to offer some inspiration when he unleashed his shot from 25 yards which the goalkeeper was only able to parry into the advancing Adam Priestley who tucked it away. this made it 2-1 with 5 minutes remaining.

Positive performances on the day came from Ryan Hill and Danny Graham who were excellent in the full back positions, and Scott Williams who for the majority of the game expressed excellent technique and vision.

Barkston Ash District Cup Semi-Final(Reserves)                                Wetherby Athletic 1 - 2 Reserves (AET)

The reserves battled through 120 minutes of football in gorgeous conditions to reach the final of the District Cup against local rivals Wetherby Athletic. Ryan Hudson, Stephen Wainwright and Bradley Jordan all returned to the side after recent duties with the first team, and Meaney was pulled back into the squad after his returning from injury.

Wetherby started the stronger side with no hint of nerves whilst the occasion had seemingly affected Sherburn's football in the first ten minutes. Sherburn's back four had to work hard with the constant threat and restricted Wetherby's tall forwards from making any efforts on goal. Surprisingly it was Sherburn who broke the deadlock against the run of play, Darren Horsfield's close-range finish directly in front of goal coming minutes after Beaston's effort had been declared offside. Sherburn never appeared to settle on the ball though, and shortly after half time Wainwright was brought off and Horsfield returned to full back.

Wetherby scored early in the second half, Bradley beaten at his near post from a tight angle from a corner, and the home side almost scored a second soon after - Bradley found himself the wrong side of a low Wetherby cross and could only watch as it rolled along the goal line and then out of play. Sherburn reverted to playing a long ball, trying to utilise Bradley's long goal kicks but rarely threatened the Wetherby keeper. With ten minutes to go Sherburn should have nicked the winner, when a long corner found Collins unmarked at the back post, only for him to drill his header into the side netting.

Both teams continued to press during extra time but there were no clear cut chances, until finally, with the game seemingly heading towards penalties, Ryan Hudson's free kick from 60 yards looped over the Wetherby defence and then caught out the stranded keeper, bouncing over him into an empty goal. The away team went wild but nearly suffered another setback, when a quick free kick from a Wetherby forward at the other end glanced off the post but was then rescued out of play.

Overall it was an average performance but Sherburn battled to a result and now face Garforth Rangers on May 4th at Tadcaster Albion.
