Barkston Ash District Cup (Reserves) Reserves 4 - 1 Great Preston
With Hudson and Horsfield called up to the first team after a strong season so far, the reserves back four changed dramatically. Bradley was called in to left back and Stuart Liddle was brought in to centre half. Daniel Withington also returned after a recent injury and Tom Lancashire made his first start after an impressive substitute appearance the week before. Meaney also returned after a recent suspension and slotted alongside Steven Wainwright in a similar 4-5-1 that was so successful at Ripon.
The game started fairly even on poor conditions; a tiny pitch and ground that cut up quickly, but Withington broke the deadlock half way through the first 45mins by stepping around three defenders before driving the ball into the top right corner from the edge of the box. Sherburn should have settled, but a Great Preston corner found an unmarked player at the back post to equalise minutes later.
Sherburn soon restored the lead, Tom Lancashire latching onto a loose ball and scoring from six yards out after some good work from Jordan and Beaston on the right and Jordan had the chance to make it 3-1 when Collins beat the offside trap from Parnaby's chip and layed the ball back, only for Jordan's drive to go narrowly wide. Meaney forced the keeper into a save and Kelsey tipped a Great Preston free kick over the bar, but Beaston finally settled the nerves, finishing a great move by drilling into the corner.
Great Preston grew more physical after going further behind but Sherburn's younger players held their own and soon Jordan made it 4-1. Withington should have made it five but shot over after breaking one on one with the keeper, and Kelsey again tipped a long range effort over the bar.
Overall, the coaching staff were delighted to reach the semi-finals of the district cup and were pleased with the performance of those stepping up from the third team. Notably Bradley at left back who won everything against a pacy forward.
