Barkston Ash F.A District Cup (Reserves)                                         Reserves 3 - 2 Thorpe United

Ryan Hudson celebrated his 21st birthday with the best goal of his career to help Sherburn on the way to the quarter finals of the District Cup. Sherburn played with a larger squad due to the third team not having a fixture; Lancashire and Tattersall were called up to the bench along with Woodhouse and Matthew Haddock who returned from injury. Keiran Meaney also made his debut for the reserves whilst Quirk returned to goalkeeping duties.

Sherburn started poorly in windy conditions, but Horsfield's break and shot in the opening fifteen minutes led to a penalty after a defender saved the ball on the line with his hand. The defender was sent off and Meaney blasted wide after previously scoring three from three spot kicks in the third team. The reserves looked to dominate but Thorpe took a surprising lead after Collins' lapse at the back gave Thorpe's single striker a chance to break through and beat Quirk with a neat finish. Minutes later and ten man Thorpe made it two; counter attacking with a long ball that carried in the wind and the Thorpe forward won the race to the ball and beat Quirk again at close range.

Sherburn created their own chances, Horsfield might have had a hat-trick of goals at the back post from Jordan and Beaston's crosses, and on the stroke of half time Collins had a chance to redeem himself from a corner but shot wide after beating a defender.

The reserves raised their game significantly in the second half and dominated everywhere on the park against a Thorpe side that quickly reverted to a physical game and hard tackling. Hudson moved into midfield and soon pulled one back with a 30 yard free kick. Horsfield made a nuisance of himself in the wall before Hudson smashed the ball into the top corner leaving the goalkeeper motionless. Minutes later Meaney made up for his penalty miss by taking the ball in space from Horsfield and driving low into the bottom right corner. Potter and Jordan then forced repeated saves from the Thorpe keeper and Beaston also had a chance to score, whilst Wainwright hit a half volley over the bar that sat up nicely in front of him, but Potter finally tapped in the winner after Wainwright played a perfect ball to Beaston who crossed from the right.

The reserves celebrated the win after a disappointing few weeks and will now look forward to Aberford at home in the league. Quirk commanded his box well and displayed some great distribution, but Beaston and Meaney stole the show in Midfield with Hudson's goal one to savour.
