After 13 years
Sherburn White Rose
finally put to rest
their failure to win
this prestigious
cup. In a tense and
exciting final, the
first team beat
local rivals
Aberford Albion 1-0.
The game started
with Sherburn's two
forwards dominating
the early stages
with their pace and
physical presence.
The very busy Jamie
Middleton had the
first chance of the
game after his
strike partner
crossed from the
left, but struck
over the bar from
close range.
Sherburn continued
to push and Adam
Priestley received a
ball down the left
channel minutes
later, beat his
marker and crossed
for Middleton to
scramble home.
Sherburn then
enjoyed much of the
first half
possession and had
two further
opportunities to
extend their lead.
The second half
started differently,
with injuries to
Gemmell, Booth and
Middleton starting
to take their toll.
Aberford continued
to press with little
creativity,
bombarding the
Sherburn penalty box
with long balls -
goalkeeper Hudson
was forced to pull
off three excellent
saves.
Sherburn's counter
attack always posed
a threat with the
pace of Priestley
and Middleton; both
having further
chances to score
from close range.
Priestley eventually
broke free on the
half way line and
was fouled outside
the box, remained on
his feet however and
tried to take the
ball around the
advancing goalkeeper
who felled him
clumsily. The
ever-improving Lee
Gemmell bravely
volunteered to take
the spot kick, but
to Sherburn's dismay
his soft strike was
easily parried by
the Aberford keeper.
The final fifteen
minutes saw Sherburn
enduring attack
after attack, but
Peacock's young side
bravely held out for
a well deserved
victory.
Nick Peacock
confirmed that this
was only the start
of things to come
and with the obvious
potential of his
young players across
the entire club the
future looks
extremely promising.
The club and
management will now
be focusing on the
reserve District Cup
Final on May 4th
before the first
team West Yorkshire
League Cup final on
May 9th.
