West Riding County Trophy                                                              Reserves 2 - 3 George Healey Utd

Despite completely dominating proceedings in the second round of the County Trophy the reserves failed to progress to the next round away in Halifax. Sherburn were missing both wingers Haddock and Beaston, as well as current top scorer Jamie Potter and usual midfielder Neil Dixon who was selected for the first team. Chris Young stepped up from the third team and Sherburn travelled with no substitutes.

Sherburn spent the entire first forty five minutes in the home side's half, spreading the ball wide and having plenty of time on the ball all over the park but failed to create any clear cut chances. Withington worked hard up front and was repeatedly brought down around the edge of the box and Wainwright tried his upmost to get the ball forward to Turton who was starting his second successive match. The keeper was barely tested though and soon the home side grew more frustrated with their lack of possession and heavy tackles started flying in. Wainwright was scythed in the middle of the park and Jordan took a nasty challenge, but both challenges went unpunished and soon Withington was hacked down again, Jordan unable to convert the freekick. The best chance of the half possibly fell to Horsfield who weaved inside a defender before having his shot blocked.

The second half started in the same manner, the George Healey forwards dropping deeper and deeper to try and see some of the ball, but Sherburn finally broke the deadlock. A deep ball to the back post saw Ryan Hudson pressure the last defender into nudging the ball into his own goal, Hudson claimed the goal although it looked dubious. The home side soon equalised, Young failed to win a challenge against his opposing winger and keeper Tom Draper failed to hold onto a through ball, a forward gambled and was gifted with a tap in to equalise. Moments later George Healey took the lead when their centre forward who had barely touched the ball at all throughout the match turned and struck a long range effort which looped over a stranded Draper - undoubtedly a goal he will never match for the rest of his career. Sherburn then reverted to a 3-5-2, Hudson creeping further forward and nearly equalised from a volley on the edge of the box that was goal bound but smashed into the back of Horsfield. Hudson then put a freekick inches wide and also hit the crossbar. Sherburn equalised with only a few minutes remaining, both Collins and Hudson unlucky not to connect with a Horsfield corner but Jordan was at the back post to smash home.

Sherburn could not believe they ended up losing this game after a long range effort from George Healey was blocked and fell to another forward who was stood yards offside in front of the keeper but was allowed to play on and shoot past Draper.

The reserves will rarely dominate a side so completely and not win a game, even one George Healey player shouted that he could not believe they had won after the final whistle was blown. In the end, although Sherburn enjoyed possession and territory throughout the entire game very few attacking options or creativity led to the defeat, emphasised by the fact the majority of Sherburn's chances fell to their centre half. A few of Sherburn's players failed to compete physically with the home side and shied away once some nasty tackles started flying in. Parnaby had a good game and Hudson was also praised by the manager. The reserves can now focus back on the league title before another cup match against Thorpe Reserves.
