Selby and District Invitation League Division 2 Garforth Rangers 4 - 2 Third Team
The third team started the game today with an untested 3-5-2 formation and found themselves 2-0 down fairly quickly in a swirling wind that was extremely difficult to play against. Richard Priestley and Ross Williams were brought into the squad from the reserves and Ben Bradley played up front in a surprise move by manager Paul Roberts.
It was clear within the first twenty minutes that whilst Garforth did not play a great deal of intelligent football, the poor conditions would make a difficult half for Sherburn. A sloppy goal followed by a miscalculation by keeper Scott Hudson put the home side comfortably ahead. Adam Johnson pulled one back against the run of play with an emphatic finish to the far post, but soon after, a long ball caught out Richard Collins and a Garforth forward was able to half volley the ball past Hudson.
Changes were made at half-time, both wide men McGarry and Lancashire were replaced by Cornish and Tom Bradley. The second half proved better for Sherburn, with Johnson finishing again at close range from a corner kick. Johnson should have equalised soon after from the same spot had it not been for a great save from the Garforth keeper. As Sherburn pushed on and controlled the game, Garforth hit back on the counter-attack and Johnson soon missed another chance to score when breaking one-on-one with the keeper.
Overall, the defeat allowed the clubs chasing Sherburn to close the gap in the table. A combination of poor conditions, a lack of support for Johnson up front due to the out of position Bradley, and the unsuccessful formation ruined what could have been a good day for the third team.
